FAQ

Common questions

FIDE's official tournament standards specify squares of 57 mm on each side and a king height of 95–105 mm, the king piece should be 75–80% of the square size for correct visual proportion and physical handling comfort during fast-paced competitive play. These dimensions have been refined over decades of tournament use and are specifically designed to prevent mishandling of pieces at speed while keeping the board compact enough to fit comfortably on a standard table. For casual corporate use, slightly smaller sets are perfectly suitable: 50 mm squares paired with an 85 mm king deliver the same proportional feel at a lower cost and with a smaller physical footprint per board. sportsOS recommends FIDE-standard sizing for campuses planning to run Swiss-system or rated tournaments, and club-standard sizing (50 mm squares) for campuses focused on casual engagement and lunchtime play. Both sizes are available in triple-weighted resin, which is our recommended material for corporate environments due to its durability and piece stability.

Digital chess clocks (the DGT brand is the FIDE-standard) are not necessary for casual campus chess. For informal lunchtime games where time pressure is set loosely or not at all, a simple mechanical double clock works perfectly well. DGT clocks become genuinely valuable when you introduce structured formats: blitz or rapid time controls where seconds matter, tournament knockouts where accurate time tracking determines advancement, or online synchronisation where the clock links to a digital results board. DGT clocks also support increment time controls (where each move adds seconds to the clock) which mechanical clocks cannot do. sportsOS includes mechanical clocks with our Club package, which suits most corporate casual environments. Tournament-grade packages include DGT clocks as standard. The price difference between the two is significant (DGT clocks typically cost ₹4,000–6,000 each versus ₹500–800 for a basic mechanical clock), so the decision should be tied directly to whether your campus intends to run structured, timed competitive formats.

Chess piece maintenance is minimal but consistent care significantly extends lifespan. Wipe pieces with a dry or very lightly damp cloth to remove dust and finger oils, avoid submerging or running water over pieces, particularly on the felt base, as moisture degrades the adhesive bonding the felt pad to the resin. When not in use, store pieces in the provided fabric bags or compartmented storage boxes to prevent them from striking each other, which causes chips to the matte or lacquer finish over time. Keep sets away from direct sunlight, which causes the lacquer finish to yellow and the felt to harden. Triple-weighted resin is our standard recommendation for corporate environments: the added weight lowers the centre of gravity, making pieces far more stable and significantly harder to knock over accidentally during play, a common frustration in a casual, high-traffic games room setting. With correct storage and handling, triple-weighted resin pieces typically last ten years or more of regular corporate use without significant degradation.

Yes, chess tournament management is one of sportsOS's most requested event services for enterprise campuses. The most common format we run is the Swiss system, which allows all registered players to compete in multiple rounds regardless of wins or losses, far better for engagement than a knockout format where half the participants are eliminated in round one. sportsOS handles the full tournament lifecycle: advance registration, seeding by self-reported rating or random draw, round-by-round pairing using Swiss-system rules, real-time results display on a digital leaderboard, and final standings with prize or certificate distribution. For formal events, we provide a qualified arbiter to manage clock disputes and rule adjudication. The tournament format, time controls, and number of rounds are designed in consultation with you based on participant count and available time. If you are purchasing chess infrastructure through sportsOS, ask about bundling a launch tournament with your infrastructure order, a popular combined package for campus sports culture events.

Yes, standard chess sets are inherently portable, which makes chess one of the most flexible activities for corporate campuses with multiple locations or shared spaces. Vinyl roll-up boards fold or roll into a compact tube and can be carried in a standard tote bag. Pieces store in drawstring fabric bags or hard-shell compartmented boxes. A complete chess set (board, pieces, and clock), weighs under two kilograms and fits in a medium backpack. For campuses managing a large inventory of sets across multiple locations, sportsOS can supply a dedicated trolley cart that organises and transports ten to fifteen sets simultaneously. The cart design uses individual labelled slots for each set, making it easy to track sets at handover between locations. Semi-rigid vinyl boards are more portable than wooden boards but less durable under heavy daily handling, for permanent table installations in a fixed games room, a wooden board with leather border is more appropriate and longer-lasting. sportsOS will recommend the right format based on your usage pattern.
