FAQ

Common questions

Choosing the right pool table size starts with your available room dimensions. The standard cue length is 145 cm, which means you need a minimum of 1.5 m of clear space on all four sides of the table for comfortable play, players should never have to shorten their stroke because of a wall. A 7-foot table (playing surface 198 × 99 cm) needs a minimum room size of 4.5 m × 3.5 m. An 8-foot table needs 4.9 m × 3.7 m, and a 9-foot table (the standard for competitive pool) needs 5.8 m × 4.0 m. These are true minimums, sportsOS recommends adding 30–40 cm on each side wherever the room permits for a comfortable playing experience. Snooker tables at 12-foot require a room of at least 7.5 m × 5.0 m. We conduct a full site visit before recommending any table size, measuring the room accurately and accounting for any columns, doors, or fixtures that affect usable cue space.

Pool and snooker are distinct games played on different tables with different equipment. A pool setup uses 16 balls (seven solids, seven stripes, the 8-ball, and a cue ball), on a 7-foot to 9-foot table with relatively wide, rounded pockets. The game is accessible to players of all skill levels, making it the right choice for most corporate games rooms. Snooker uses 22 balls on a 12-foot table with significantly tighter, leather-lined pockets and faster, more delicate cloth, the game demands precise cueing technique, longer reach, and a much larger room. Snooker is the correct choice for dedicated games rooms with generous square footage and employees who already play regularly. From a practical standpoint, pool tables are significantly less expensive, take up less space, and generate higher daily usage in corporate settings. Most sportsOS campus installations are pool tables; snooker setups are specified for clients with specific competitive aspirations or large dedicated facilities.

The floor does not need to be perfectly level, sportsOS handles all levelling through the table installation process. All pool and snooker tables we supply come with precision adjustable levelling feet beneath the frame, allowing us to compensate for floor unevenness that would be impossible to eliminate without major civil works. Using a precision spirit level across multiple axes of the playing surface, we bring the slate within 0.5 mm of true level regardless of the underlying floor condition. This matters because even a 1 mm gradient across the table creates a noticeable roll bias that affects every shot. Concrete and tile floors are preferred substrates: they do not flex under the table weight and remain stable over time. Carpet is acceptable for lighter 7-foot single-piece slate tables if firm rubber leg pads are fitted to prevent leg sinkage. Three-piece slate tables should never be placed on thick carpet, the flexibility of carpet over time causes level drift that requires periodic re-levelling.

Andy & Wiraka billiard cloth is a professional-grade worsted fabric that typically lasts three to five years under regular corporate use of five to ten hours per day. The clearest signs that cloth replacement is overdue include a visible nap direction (cloth fibres have been compressed by repeated play into a directional pattern), thin or bald patches developing near the spots where balls are most frequently placed, inconsistent ball roll speed across different parts of the table, and an obvious colour change from the original shade. Quality cloth should feel uniformly smooth in all directions and deliver consistent ball speed everywhere on the surface. sportsOS offers cloth re-covering as a standalone service available to all clients, regardless of whether we supplied the original table. A re-cover on a standard pool table is typically a full day's work, we remove the cushion rail rubbers, re-bed the slate if needed, lay and stretch the new cloth, and reset the pockets. The cost is a fraction of table replacement.

Yes, pool and snooker tables can be relocated after installation, but the process always requires professional disassembly and full re-levelling at the new location. A three-piece slate table (standard for 8-foot and 9-foot pool and all snooker tables) must be fully disassembled: cushion rails removed, slate sections lifted and stacked carefully, and the frame broken down before moving. Re-assembly at the new location requires re-shimming and re-levelling the slate to within 0.5 mm, re-fitting and tensioning the cushion rails, and replacing or re-stretching the cloth if the move has stressed it. The full process typically takes four to six hours for a three-piece slate table. Single-piece slate tables (most 7-foot tables) are more straightforward to move but still require two to three people and correct handling, dropping or stressing the slate causes cracks that are extremely difficult and expensive to repair. sportsOS offers table relocation as a paid service carried out by our own trained installation team.
