Common questions
Tournament-grade carrom boards are manufactured to significantly tighter specifications than standard leisure boards, and the difference is immediately noticeable to any player who has used both. The playing surface uses premium birch or rubber-wood ply with a high-grade lacquer finish that has been precision-sanded to produce a uniformly fast, consistent surface, coins glide predictably without unexpected deceleration in any direction. The frame is typically seasoned rosewood or teak with tight construction tolerances, which prevents warping in humidity changes. Pockets are machined to precise dimensions, too small and coins glance off; too large and the game lacks precision. Tournament boards also have a verified surface flatness: the board surface should not deviate more than 0.5 mm across its full span. For casual use, a good quality standard board is adequate. For any campus planning internal competitions or attracting skilled players, the tournament-grade board delivers an experience that standard boards simply cannot match, and employees notice the difference immediately.
Carrom participation rates vary significantly between campuses, but sportsOS uses a reliable planning ratio based on data across our 60+ client sites. For casual use with no structured programming, one board per 20–25 employees is a sound starting point, for a 100-person campus, that means four to five boards placed across different common areas or in a dedicated games room. If you plan to run structured internal tournaments, the calculus changes: during a tournament round, you want multiple matches happening simultaneously so the event concludes within a working lunch period rather than spanning multiple days. For 100 employees with tournament ambitions, eight to ten boards is a better target. Also consider distributed placement: two boards in the canteen, two in a break room, and two in a games room generate more aggregate daily play than six boards concentrated in one location. sportsOS can advise on placement strategy as part of the infrastructure consultation at no additional charge.
Lighting matters more for carrom than for almost any other indoor sports equipment, and incorrect lighting is the single most common setup mistake sportsOS encounters in corporate games rooms. The issue is surface glare: carrom boards have a smooth lacquered surface that reflects light directly into players' eyes at certain angles, distorting how they judge coin trajectory and pocket alignment. The solution is dedicated pendant lighting positioned directly above the board at a calibrated height (typically 90–100 cm from board surface to bulb), with a warm white colour temperature (2700–3000 K) that illuminates the surface evenly without specular reflection. General ceiling downlights that are not centred above the board create directional shadows that make coins on one side harder to see clearly. sportsOS recommends a dedicated pendant for every board, hardwired or on a track system. The investment is minimal (typically ₹2,000–4,000 per pendant), and the improvement in play quality is immediately apparent to anyone who has played on a properly lit board.
Carrom board maintenance is straightforward but must be done consistently to preserve the playing surface and board life. Before each session, apply a light, even dusting of carrom powder (pure boric acid (H₃BO₃) in fine powder form), and spread it across the surface with a gentle circular motion before removing excess. This reduces coin friction and preserves the lacquer. After each session, wipe the surface clean with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove excess powder and any dirt. Never use water or damp cloths on the playing surface, moisture warps the wood and damages the lacquer irreversibly. Store or place boards away from direct sunlight and humidity sources such as open windows, air-conditioning vents, or damp walls. Humidity changes cause the ply layers to expand and contract, gradually warping the surface and affecting coin roll. A well-maintained tournament-grade board will last eight to twelve years of regular corporate use. sportsOS provides a comprehensive written care guide at handover with every board supplied.
Yes, sportsOS offers two custom branding options for carrom boards. The most popular is precision laser engraving directly onto the board frame or side rail, which produces a permanent, high-resolution reproduction of your company logo or text. The alternative is a custom-printed decal on the frame for simpler designs where engraving is not needed. We also offer co-branded coin bags (the small drawstring pouches used to store the striker and coins), printed with your logo in a custom colour. Custom orders require a lead time of two to three weeks from artwork approval to delivery, so plan accordingly if the boards are needed for a specific event launch or campus opening. Branding is popular for three purposes: new office openings where the games room is part of the launch experience, internal sporting events where you want branded equipment in photographs, and gifting high-quality tournament boards to key clients or partner campuses as relationship investments.
